Hair Coloring 101

Read the instructions of any product used to color your hair. They will all advise you to do a test spot on your skin to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used. Put a small amount of the colorant, about half the size of a dime, on the inside of your wrist before you go to bed. By morning you will know if you get a reaction or not. If you do get an allergic reaction, thoroughly clean the area with soap and water. If it gets worse, contact your doctor.

Your hair should be relatively clean and free of tangles or knots. Hair coloring products like Manic Panic will stain your skin and clothes. Wear clothes you don't care if they get stained (shoes too). Get a towel you can stain and wrap it around your shoulders. It should completely wrap around you and be a bit longer than you hair, use a safety pin to secure. You will need latex or plastic gloves!

Put a thin layer of Noxzema or Vaseline around your hairline and over your ears. This will help keep the color off your skin. (If it gets on your skin, try to wipe it off immediately or use washcloth with some soap and gently rub the area or use a product designed to remove hair dye from your skin). Avoid using chlorine bleach because it is toxic to your skin and may cause serious allergic reactions. If you get any substance in your eyes, flush with warm water immediately and contact a physician. Do not use these kinds of products to color eyebrows or eyelashes. They are designed for hair only.

You can do one of two things: either bleach your hair for a richer color (use a specifically designed product used for removing color in you hair and avoid using chlorine bleach) or put it on your hair as it is. When you dye your hair know that most of those dyes are liquid like so you will have to put some in the palm of your hand (wearing your gloves) and work it into your hair starting slightly above your roots and going to your tips. Start with the area around your face. After you get a good amount of dye in your hair work it through with a comb. Don't rush this. The object is to cover your hair evenly with color. When your hair is completely covered you can comb it back, comb it up or pin it up.

Wait times vary. You can use a timer to be exact or wait about 20 minutes. I recommend waiting a bit longer if you have darker hair. Wash you hair after time is up to remove any extra color and use a gentle shampoo. Now you must go show off your hair!

Most of these dyes will wash out in a month depending on how often you wash your hair and how harsh your shampoo is (they will not wash out the first few time you wash you hair). If you want to remove the color, make sure you wash your hair a few times and then use a product designed for removing hair color and avoid using chlorine bleach. I also find using a permanent colorant like L'Oreal after washing you hair several times works as well. If you want to color your hair another wild shade, strip the color out using color remover first and then color it. Be yourself and be creative.
